Frequently Asked Questions
When should I get a mental health evaluation for my child?
Consider an evaluation if worries, sadness, anger, or unusual habits last more than a few weeks or interfere with school, friendships, sleep, or family life. You do not need to wait for a crisis.
What are signs of anxiety or depression in children?
Signs include frequent stomachaches or headaches, avoiding school or activities, irritability, changes in sleep or appetite, withdrawal from friends, and ongoing sadness or hopelessness.
Is OCD in children just being a perfectionist?
No. OCD involves unwanted, distressing thoughts and repetitive behaviors that take up time and cause distress. It is a treatable medical condition.
Do I need a referral to see Starfish Pediatrics for mental health care?
No referral is needed for existing patients. Call our office or request an appointment online to get started.
Will my child need medication?
Not always. Many children improve with coping skills, counseling, and routine changes. If medication may help, we discuss benefits and risks with you first and monitor your child closely.
